Choosing Cladding Colour to Suit Brickwork

Choosing Cladding Colour to Suit Brickwork

Warm brick tones often pair well with cream, anthracite or sage cladding, while red brick can carry darker grey finishes confidently.

Start With the Brick, Not the Colour Chart

Brickwork is usually the one element of a façade you are not going to change. Cladding, windows, doors, fascias and guttering can all be replaced or repainted, but the brick is fixed. That is why the most reliable approach is to let the brickwork lead and choose the cladding colour to answer it, rather than picking a shade you like in isolation and hoping it settles in.

Most disappointment with cladding colour comes down to undertone rather than hue. Two greys can look identical on a swatch and completely different against a wall of weathered red brick. Before you order anything, spend ten minutes looking properly at your brick in flat, overcast daylight — that is when its true colour shows, without the warming help of late afternoon sun.

Reading the Undertones in Your Brickwork

Brick falls into two broad camps for our purposes: warm and cool. Warm bricks run through buff, honey, terracotta and orange-red. Cool bricks lean towards purple-red, brown-grey and the blue-black of Staffordshire-style engineering brick.

  • Mortar matters as much as the brick. A creamy lime mortar softens a red brick wall; a hard grey cement mortar cools it down considerably. Cladding should usually sit closer to the mortar than to the brick itself.
  • Look at the whole elevation, not one brick. A single brick pulled out of the wall is often far more saturated than the wall reads as a whole.
  • Check the roof and guttering. If your roof tiles are already a warm brown, a cool blue-grey cladding can look like it belongs to a different house.

Warm Brick Tones: Cream, Sage and Soft Anthracite

Buff, honey and London stock brick are forgiving and quietly handsome, and they pair well with a fairly wide range of finishes. Cream and off-white cladding is the classic pairing here — it lifts the elevation without fighting the brick, and it works particularly well on north-facing walls where everything reads a shade darker anyway.

Sage green has become a firm favourite for good reason. Against warm brick it reads as considered rather than trendy, and it teams beautifully with cream window frames and a darker front door. If you want something more contemporary, anthracite grey on warm brick is a confident choice, but keep it to a mid-tone rather than near-black so the wall still has room to breathe.

A practical rule: the warmer and more textured the brick, the more you can afford a slightly muted cladding colour. Strong, clean colours compete with texture; soft ones sit alongside it.

Red Brick and Darker Grey Finishes

Red brick can carry darker grey cladding confidently — it is one of the few combinations where a deep anthracite or slate grey genuinely enhances the wall rather than overwhelming it. The red provides the warmth, the grey provides the contrast, and the two balance each other.

  • Anthracite grey is the safe dark choice and works on almost every red brick, from bright new-build red to weathered Victorian.
  • Charcoal and near-black suit older, deeper-toned brick better than freshly laid bright red, which can look harsh beside it.
  • Blue-grey is worth considering on purple-red brick, where it echoes the cooler tones already present in the wall.
  • Cream on red brick is a traditional, high-contrast look — smart, but it does make the brick look redder, so only go there if you like that effect.

Test Before You Commit

Sample boards are essential and, crucially, they must be viewed vertically. Cladding is a vertical surface and colour shifts considerably when a sample is lying flat on a table. Hold it up against the wall, stand back across the road, and look again in the evening.

Bear in mind that a north-facing wall never receives direct sun and will always appear cooler and darker, so a colour that looks perfect on a sunny south elevation may feel flat on the other side of the house. If your cladding wraps a corner, check the sample on both aspects. Also confirm that the window frames, door and any guttering you are keeping are part of the decision — a sage cladding with brilliant white frames and a cream front door will look muddled.

Finishes, Texture and Long-Term Upkeep

Colour is only half the story; finish changes how a colour behaves. Woodgrain foils add subtle texture that suits traditional brick and hides minor surface marks well. Smooth matte finishes look sharper and more modern, and they tend to suit contemporary extensions and clean-lined new-build elevations.

Anthracite and other dark colours absorb more heat and show dust and water spotting more readily than mid-tones, so a quick wipe down once or twice a year is sensible. Lighter colours reflect heat and tend to hold their appearance with less attention. Whatever you choose, order all the cladding for a project at the same time where possible, as slight batch variation between orders can be noticeable on a long run.

Get the undertone right, test the sample in position, and the cladding will look as though it was always meant to be there.
